0366 Elk Calf Feeding in the Madison

Yearling elk calf is feeding on vegetation from the bottom of the Madison River which is fed, in part, by the nearby thermal pools of Yellowstone. The weed that grows on the river bottom is rich in minerals, specifically arcenic. Only a small portion of the Yellowstone elk herds can tolerate the arcenic, others would die from eating the arcenic laced bottom vegetation.
