Frigatebirds have the longest wingspan, in proportion to weight, of all birds. While living its life almost entirely at sea, it rarely, if ever will land on water. Frigatebirds are the only seabirds where the male and female are strikingly different. The male has an orange throat patch which inflates into a huge bright orange balloon during courtship. The female has a white breast and no orange throat patch. Juveniles have white heads and white breast with pale grey legs. The split tail makes this bird very identifiable from great distances.
